What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that happens when your blood glucose or blood sugar, is too high. Source of energy comes from the food you eat that is from blood glucose. Pancreas made a hormone (Insulin) that helps glucose from food get into to be used for energy. The problem is when the body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose will remain in your blood and doesn’t reach to your cells.

Types  of diabetes

Diabetes type 1 - where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
Diabetes type 2 - where the body doesn't produce enough insulin, or the body's cells don't react to insulin
Gestational diabetes - only happens while pregnancy. It means you have high blood sugar levels, but those levels were normal before you were pregnant.


Common symptoms or signs of diabetes

  • Urinating frequently
  • Excessive thirst hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Slow to heal Cuts/bruise
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Pain, tingling or numbness in the hands/feet
  • Breath odor fruity, sweet, or an acetone odor
  • Darkening of skin in areas of body creases
  • Skin infections
